Sheriff Mike Kanalakis

"Thank you for visiting the official web site for the Monterey County Sheriff's Office. On behalf of all employees we appreciate your interest in our department.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office has a rich and colorful history dating back to 1850. It is one of the oldest established departments in the state. Currently the department has approximately 450 employees with an annual budget of approximately $50 million. We provide a wide array of services and are proud to be a community oriented, community based law enforcement agency.

In the early days of the California republic when the main crimes concerning Sheriffs were cattle rustling, horse thieves and highway bandits today we are faced with new challenges. Our priorities have shifted to homeland defense, gang suppression, school violence, domestic violence, and illegal drugs. Nevertheless, the vast expanse of our great county still demands that we deal with protecting our vital resources to include farm land, ranches and a beautiful coast line.

If you are interested in a career in law enforcement I would encourage you to apply with us. We are always looking for good applicants willing to serve our communities. A career with our department can be fun, exciting and most of all very rewarding. We test on a continuous basis so please look for our next test date.

And of course I am always interested in feedback. So let me know what you think. How can we do better to serve our communities? Drop me a line and let me know.

I appreciate you taking the time to visit. Be safe and please be a good citizen by reporting suspicious activity or crime as soon as possible to us. I thank you for the opportunity to serve you."
