Administrative Bureau - Recruiting Division

The Recruiting Division falls under our Administration Bureau. The Administration Bureau has several other divisions, the Fiscal Division, Coroner Division, Civil Division, Records Division, and Professional Standards Division

The newly created Recruiting Division is comprised of personnel who are responsible for not only recruiting critically needed personnel for all areas of the Sheriff’s Office but also for completing background investigations on all applicants. A Commander, one Sergeant, one Professional Staff member, and seven part-time Background Investigators staff this Division.

Recruiters: All staff members assigned to the Recruiting Division are considered Recruiters. Recruiters actively recruit persons for every position within the Sheriff’s Office. This is accomplished by advertising in local publications as well as on the Internet and in several career oriented magazines. Recruiters work booths at local fairs, attend job fairs and make personal appearances at California Law Enforcement Academies as well as Colleges and Universities. The main goal of the Recruiting Division is to fill all current vacancies within the Sheriff’s Office.

Background Investigations: The Background Investigators are responsible for completing background investigations on all Sheriff’s Office personnel. This includes safety personnel, professional staff, temporary staff and volunteers. Additionally, the investigators conduct background investigations for various other County departments and outside agencies upon request. Members of this Unit conducted 288 background investigations in 2005 and several more in 2006.

The background investigation process can be quite lengthy, especially for sworn personnel, who by Government Code Standards must be deemed “of good moral character” to hold a law enforcement position in California. Investigators thoroughly check an applicant’s history by conducting interviews, making home visits and reviewing records from several sources. During this process, they may potentially make contact with references, former employers, schools, and local law enforcement agencies as well as research court records. Every effort is put forth to thoroughly screen all qualified applicants and hire only those who meet Sheriff’s Office standards.
