Custody Enforcement Bureau Chief Deputy
Norbert “Bert” Liebersbach

With deep sadness, Sheriff Mike Kanalakis announces that Custody Enforcement Bureau Chief Deputy Norbert “Bert” Liebersbach is retiring. Chief Liebersbach, a 30-year employee with the Monterey County Office of the Sheriff, will end his long and distinguished career on December 28, 2007.

Originally from North Dakota, and after serving three years with the U. S. Army, Chief Liebersbach started his career with the Monterey County Office of the Sheriff in 1977. He worked his way up through the ranks. He was promoted to Sergeant in June 1983, to Lieutenant/Commander in December 1990, Captain in March 2003 and finally Chief Deputy in January 2005. An experienced leader, Chief Liebersbach worked virtually every assignment within the Custody Operations Bureau to include the Main Jail, Rehabilitation Facility, Transportation Unit and Bailiff.

Chief Liebersbach has been very active in the community. He served as President of the Monterey County Peace Officers Association, two-term President of the Central California Jail Managers Association and the Board of Trustees of the Salinas Elks Lodge 614.

He and his wife Susan will be relocating to Rancho Mirage California where they will enjoy a well deserved retirement with friends and family. Sheriff Kanalakis and everyone here at the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office will miss him and we wish him and Susan the very best.
