Congratulations Sergeant Jose Mendoza!

It is with great pride that Sheriff Mike Kanalakis announces that Custody Operations Bureau Sergeant Jose Mendoza has been selected as the 2006 Deputy of the Year. Sgt. Mendoza, a 10–year veteran of the office is being recognized for his leadership and innovative ideas that have been implemented.

Sgt. Mendoza created the Increased Security Level (ISL) policy that resulted in a safer working environment for Sheriff’s personnel.

Sgt. Mendoza stepped up when the formation of a Sheriff’s Honor Guard was proposed. He accepted a leadership role in the newly formed unit and was instrumental in forming and organizing the unit. Through his hard work, the Honor Guard has served with pride and distinction at numerous functions to honor fallen Peace Officers to include funerals of Officers throughout the state that gave their lives in the line of duty. Sgt. Mendoza receives no extra benefits or pay for his service in the Honor Guard. This is his way to honor his chosen profession and to those that gave all they had.

The Monterey County Board of Supervisors will recognize Sgt. Mendoza on Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at the weekly board meeting. He will also be recognized at the annual Sheriff’s Deputies Benefit Association Dinner on 12/16/06.
