Custody Operations Bureau - Court Services Division

The Court Services Division falls under the Custody Operations Bureau. The Custody Operations Bureau has another division, the Detention Division, and both are commanded by Chief Ray McLaughlin and Captain Pat Hunton, along with five commanders and nineteen sergeants. At full staff, one hundred and forty four deputies and forty-five professional staff are assigned to the Custody Operations Bureau.

Court Services Division:
The responsibilities of this Division include the transportation of inmates to and from court, Bailiff assignments and duties, courthouse security, and the Work Alternative Program.

Work Alternative Program – During 2006, 2669 people were processed through this alternative-to-incarceration program. A total of 305,682 hours were worked and $303,695 in revenues was generated. In addition to Work Alternative Program bookings, 296 bookings were processed for the Probation Department’s Home Confinement Program and 243 bookings for the District Attorney’s Office.

Transportation Unit – This Unit is responsible for the movement of inmates to and from court, other jails, state prisons, outside medical appointments, as well as the transport of individuals who have been arrested in other counties or states and are wanted in Monterey County. The Unit operates a fleet of four buses and ten vans including a van for the disabled. In 2006, this Unit transported over 25,486 inmates to and from court, an average of 103.2 per day.

Bailiff/Court Security Unit – This Unit provides court security for the California Superior Court (Monterey County). The nineteen bailiffs are responsible for court security, assisting juries, maintaining the decorum of the courts, escorting inmates to and from court, and processing court remands.
